Born out of the social upheaval of the late 1960s, the Children of God began as a seemingly peaceful religious movement offering love, community, and spiritual purpose to a generation searching for meaning. Founded by the charismatic and manipulative David Berg, the group quickly evolved into one of the most notorious cults of the 20th century. Beneath its promises of enlightenment and freedom lay authoritarian control, extreme isolation, and increasingly dangerous beliefs-including the infamous practice of flirty fishing, which exploited women and shattered moral boundaries.
As the cult expanded internationally, disturbing allegations of abuse, psychological manipulation, and exploitation-particularly of children-emerged. Survivors who escaped revealed a hidden world of trauma, secrecy, and fear that left lifelong scars on those raised within the movement. Though the group later rebranded as The Family International, the damage inflicted under Berg's leadership remains undeniable.
