The Literary Goddess of the 1930s
Tales of Hulan River takes Xiao Hong's hometown, Hulan Town, as its subject, depicting the distinctive rural customs of this northeastern Chinese settlement and the ordinary lives of its people. The townsfolk are portrayed as both kind and courageous, yet also numb to reality, resigned to a life of passive endurance. Within this contradiction, Xiao Hong channels her nostalgia for childhood and homeland.
Stylistically, though classified as a novel, Tales of Hulan River lacks a conventional narrative structure. Instead, it carries the lyrical looseness of prose and poetry, suffused throughout with an inescapable melancholy.
