The author focuses on several power blocs-namely, the Imperial Consort and External Relatives Faction (including Empress Yang of Emperor Wu, Empress Jia of Emperor Hui, and Liu Yuan's consort Yang Xianrong), the Literati Elite Faction (such as Shi Chong, Pan Yue, the Lu Ji and Lu Yun brothers, Liu Kun, Zhang Hua, Pei Wei, and others), and the Imperial Clan Faction (the various princes of the Sima family)-who sometimes allied and sometimes clashed. The novel delves into their overt and covert struggles, schemes, and betrayals.
