儒家是我國學術的主流，也是中國文化的代表。我在進高中得時候，老總統蔣公下令高中學生一定要學習《中國文化基本教材》，其實就是選編《四書》的精華。所以我高中畢業之後，對於儒家思想已經打下了很好的基礎。
以後進了師範大學，還要修《四書》，另外加上經史子集。大學畢業，教高中國文，更是天天講《四書》。所以後來我進入研究所碩士班的時候，儒家思想已經熟得不得了了。在寫碩士論文的時候，就想到要找一個有挑戰性的，所以沒寫儒家方面的題目，而寫了《先秦道家思想研究》。
可是到了我博士班快畢業的時候，因為考慮到經學終究是我國傳統的第一等學問。經學是不好搞的，有人一輩子都搞不通。所以說「青春作賦，皓首窮經」，你作文學家還容易，但是要把經書搞通，非得一輩子的功夫、頭髮白了才可以。
就這樣，我一頭栽進了中國的經典，由青春搞到年老。總算對於中國的經典有了概略的認識。我的博士論文是研究《詩經》的，後來又研究了《易經》。
講中國文化，不懂中國經典，那是笑話。對於中國經典，用外國人、仇視中國人的眼光去看，你永遠無法正確的瞭解。
我，一個平凡的中國人；請不要說我是民族自大狂，或是什麼義和團思想。中國文化好的地方當然要表揚；中國文化不好的地方當然也不必諱疾忌醫。我就是用這種態度來看儒家經典、中國文化。不同意的可以來討論，但絕不接受帝國主義的跟班來無理取鬧。我就是這麼一個態度。
提起儒家思想，一定要說到四書、五經。所以，四書、五經就成了我這部書的主軸。
為了體諒一般讀者的接受能力，我一開始有一道開胃菜，包括：弟子規、孝經新講、王陽明家訓講疏、朱子治家格言。以引起讀者的興趣。
第二部，四書之部，羅列了以「四書新講」為主的資料，還有相關的討論，並附「荀子」請您往下看去。
