本书主人公黄翔（1941－ ），湖南省桂东县人，为追求生命自由和创作自由，先后六次羁狱，受尽迫害，从1958年起笔耕四十余年，著述约三百万字，长期在中国大陆惨遭禁毁，1997年，携妻子秋潇雨兰旅居美国。
目前在海外出版的黄翔作品，主要有《黄翔--狂饮不醉的兽形》，诗集《黄翔禁毁诗选》，散文集《梦巢随笔》、半自传体长篇小说《自由之血》，传记《喧嚣与寂寞--黄翔自传-东方叙事》，受禁诗歌系列：《活着的墓碑--魇》《裸隐体和大动脉》《诗--没有围墙的居室》《非纪念碑--一个弱者的自画像》《我在黑暗中摇滚喧哗》《独自孤寂中悄声细语》，太阳屋手记三书：《总是寂寞》《沉思的雷暴》和《锋芒毕露的伤口》，部分作品已被译为英、法、瑞典文、日文等多种语言。
