1949年考入蘇南新聞專科學校，後參加土改工作。1954年，她以江蘇省高考第一名的成績考入北京大學中文系新聞專業，才華橫溢，積極參與校園文藝活動，被稱為紅樓里的林姑娘。
1957年，林昭因在北大發表批評性言論和參與自由思想討論，被划為右派分子，遭到處分。她拒絕低頭，甚至嘗試自殺以示抗議，但被搶救。
1959年，她在上海參與籌辦民間地下刊物《星火》，發表長詩《海鷗之歌》等作品，批判時弊。
1960年，《星火》成員被捕，林昭也被逮捕入獄。
在獄中，林昭堅持不認罪，多次絕食、自殺，並用血在被單上寫作，留下約二十萬字的血書，內容涉及對極左路線的批判和對自由的追求。
1968年4月29日，林昭被以現行反革命罪槍決，年僅36歲。臨刑前，她留下血書《歷史將宣告我無罪》。
林昭的經歷反映了特定歷史時期知識分子的悲劇命運，她的堅持與抗爭為後世人們所敬仰。
