In the summer of 1997, Pat Rodgers set out to kayak around Ireland.
There were no smartphones, no weather apps and no easy way to know what lay ahead. Travelling on a shoestring and carrying everything he needed in his kayak, he relied on paper charts, judgement, local knowledge and a willingness to keep going when plans fell apart.
What began as a shared adventure gradually became something more personal, as Pat made his way around some of the wildest and most exposed stretches of the Irish coast - through fog, headwinds, long crossings, unexpected encounters and days when the weather made progress impossible.
Based on the diary he kept at the time, Chasing Tides is the story of a 1,500-kilometre journey around Ireland - and of a very different era of adventure, when being stranded was a real possibility and the next stage often had to be worked out along the way.
