Kentucky was admitted as the fifteenth state in the U.S. on June 1, 1792. From then until the early 1900s, the commonwealth boasted around 58 charcoal iron furnaces operating in 20 counties and 5 iron districts between 1791 and 1912. At one point during this period, Kentucky ranked as high as 3rd in iron production. This book delves into the history of each furnace, spanning the commonwealth from the Big Sandy area to the Land Between the Lakes region.
