Mexico City is sinking into the bed of a lake the Aztecs worshipped as a goddess.

The Aztecs called her Chalchiuhtlicue, She of the Jade Skirt, and she held every kind of living water, down to the lake their capital was built inside. They baptized their newborns in her name, washing each child while the midwife spoke to the goddess directly, centuries before Spanish priests arrived and were disturbed by how much the rite looked like their own baptism. Water from her was life itself, and mothers prayed to her to bring a child safely into the world.

But she had drowned a world before. She ruled the age that came before this one, and it ended when the sky fell and her waters swallowed everything in a single day. The people who survived were turned into fish. In one telling, a god accused her of only pretending to be kind, and she wept for fifty-two years, and her tears became the flood.

The Spanish drained her lake and raised their city where it had been. Now that city is sinking into the dry ground and running out of water, on top of the goddess who ended the last world with a flood.
