The Cassique of Kiawah: A Colonial Romance is a historical novel written by William Gilmore Simms. The book is set in colonial South Carolina during the early 18th century and tells the story of a young Englishman named Percival who travels to the New World to seek his fortune. Upon arriving in South Carolina, Percival becomes enamored with the beauty and mystery of Kiawah Island, a place inhabited by the native Cassique tribe. He soon meets and falls in love with the Cassique chief's daughter, Alibama, and the two embark on a passionate and forbidden romance.As Percival becomes more involved in the politics and power struggles of the colonial government, he must navigate the complex relationships between the English settlers, the native tribes, and the African slaves who work the plantations. Meanwhile, Alibama must balance her love for Percival with her loyalty to her people and her duty as a future leader of the Cassique tribe.The Cassique of Kiawah is a tale of love, adventure, and political intrigue that offers a vivid portrayal of life in colonial South Carolina.
