Boone Barlow knows two things for sure: somebody stole Pete the Possum's giant mascot head, and Boone is definitely the kid to solve the case.

With Possum Gap Elementary's Founders Day Parade only days away, Boone launches his first official investigation. Along the way, Boone ruins a perfectly good shirt with cocoa powder, conducts a disastrous stakeout, follows clues in completely reasonable wrong directions, and discovers that being suspicious is not the same thing as being guilty.
When the trail finally leads outside school, Boone learns the missing mascot mystery is much stranger than he imagined, involving a feed sack, a frightened little sister, a goat named Nugget, and one extremely enthusiastic cattle dog. Now Boone has to find Pete before the parade or Possum Gap Elementary will be forced to march behind the terrifying old backup mascot known to every kid in school as Dead Pete.
