The author consulted original sources, reinvestigated records in so far as he could, and carefully sieved out narratives of doubtful provenance or possible ambiguity. The resulting collation of some thirty reports (less than ten per cent. of the material) proves incontrovertibly that as yet unclassified ocean-going creatures are still leading a maligned, if anonymous, existence. While perhaps not as incontrovertible as certain contemporary reviews claimed, Lieutenant-Commander Rupert T. Gould's compilation and analysis of significant and credible sea-serpent accounts is still considered an important classic investigation into marine monster phenomena. It remains a useful volume for the cryptozoological library.
