There is no word in English for what you are.
You are not a carer, officially. You are not next of kin. You are simply the person who has somebody's name in your head at four in the morning, and who will go on having it there for as long as it takes, and nobody has ever asked how you are without a follow-up question about them.
Almost every book of prayers is written for the person in trouble. This one is written for the person in the second chair.
CARRYING THEIR NAME is a book of fifty-five quiet prayers for the mother whose messages are read and not answered. The husband who knows exactly how much is being drunk and has said nothing for eleven months. The daughter who leaves the care home every Thursday feeling like a traitor. The friend who has been holding somebody's secret for six days and has nowhere to put it.
The prayers are arranged by relationship, not by problem, because the relationship decides what you are allowed to do:
- The child you cannot reach - ten prayers, from unanswered messages to not knowing where they are tonight
- The person you married - eight, including the one who has stopped believing, and the marriage you are not sure will last
- The parent who is failing - eight, including the one who was not a good parent and is now a frail one
- The friend who is going under - eight, including the secret you were asked to keep
- The one who does not want your prayers - seven, on restraint
- When carrying them is costing you - eight of the most honest prayers in the book
- When you do not know how it ends - six, including the last one, which is three lines long
Every prayer has four parts: what you are carrying, the prayer itself, one King James verse with chapter and verse so you can check it, and - the part that makes this book different - a line headed WHAT THIS PRAYER DOES NOT PROMISE.
That line matters. A book that implies your praying will bring somebody back, cure an addiction, save a marriage or prevent a death is setting you up to blame yourself later. A great many people are carrying exactly that blame right now because of something they read. This book will not do that to you. Several prayers say plainly: this is not the response to this situation, ring somebody.
