The Carolinians is a captivating historical novel written by Jane Barry. Set in the American South during the Civil War, the story follows the lives of two families - the Hazards and the Mains - as they navigate through the tumultuous times of war and love. The novel begins with the introduction of George Hazard, a young man from Pennsylvania who is sent to South Carolina to attend a military academy. There, he meets Orry Main, a wealthy plantation owner's son, and the two become fast friends despite their differing backgrounds. As the war breaks out, the two friends find themselves on opposite sides of the conflict. George fights for the Union army while Orry joins the Confederate army. Despite their differences, their friendship remains strong, and they try to maintain their bond amidst the chaos of the war.The novel also explores the romantic relationships of the characters. George falls in love with Constance, Orry's sister, and their relationship faces many challenges due to the war. Meanwhile, Orry falls in love with Madeline, a beautiful woman from a prominent Southern family, and their relationship is threatened by the tensions between the North and the South. The Carolinians is a beautifully written novel that captures the essence of the Civil War era. It is a story of love, friendship, and sacrifice, and it provides a unique perspective on the complexities of the war and its impact on the lives of ordinary people. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
