Covering sixty years of writing, Carl Sandburg's America is the first text to survey and analyze all the complete works of this most famous and beloved American poet. The text helps readers understand the works and shows them how Sandburg's writing contributed to and influenced American literature in the 20th Century.

The book analyzes how Sandburg's early writing reflected his political agenda and how that agenda broadened over time. Readers will become familiar with the reasons Sandburg's literary reputation declined. In addition, readers will gain insight into how Carl Sandburg attempted to reconstruct and reinvent American literature and how he experimented with various literary genres in his own writing.

The book helps readers become familiar with Sandburg's life and poetry and improve their own work by analyzing his. Carl Sandburg's America can be used in introductory and survey courses, as well as upper-division literature classes. With its numerous examples of excellent writing, the book is also a useful supplemental text for courses on writing and rhetoric.
