Why do people watch for a groundhog's shadow each February?
The answer begins long before Groundhog Day...
Candlemas is celebrated forty days after Christmas and has long been a day of light, weather signs, and winter traditions. For generations, people watched for clues that spring might be on its way and shared stories about what animals, shadows, and changing weather might reveal about the weeks ahead.
Discover how celebrations traveled across countries and evolved over time. Inside this book, young readers will explore:
- The Roots of Candlemas: How a day of light turned into a day of weather lore.
- Global Animal Predictors: Meet the badgers of Germany, hedgehogs of England, bears of Romania, and the marmots of Switzerland.
- Famous Modern Groundhogs: America's Punxsutawney Phil and the white fur hat that launched Canada's Wiarton Willie festival!
Filled with rich history, folklore, and seasonal customs, Candlemas: A Story About Groundhog Day introduces children to the surprising story behind a familiar February holiday.
This book is perfect for:
- Parents and grandparents looking for unique holiday storybooks.
- Teachers and homeschoolers seeking engaging STEM/History supplemental reading for winter.
- Curious kids ages 4-8 who love animals, history, and folklore.
The Changing Traditions series explores the history, folklore, and evolving customs behind holidays and celebrations, inviting young readers to discover how traditions change over time.
