Michelle Sandlin was living a healthy, clean life.
For two years, she worked out six days a week, one to two hours a day. She didn't drink. She didn't smoke. She didn't do drugs. She looked great. She felt great. And she was in the best shape of her life.
That's when she found a lump in her right breast. Days later, she was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer, one of the most aggressive forms of the disease.
Cancer Don't Care is Michelle's candid, deeply introspective memoir about what happened next - the good, the bad, the bald - and what it took to process the emotional and physical reality of cancer from the other side.
Unknowingly, Michelle had been strengthening her body for the fight of her life. After sixteen rounds of chemotherapy, along with immunotherapy and a double mastectomy, she was declared cancer-free! Reconstruction surgeries followed, and because genetic testing had revealed a BRCA1 gene mutation, she also underwent the preemptive removal of her ovaries and fallopian tubes as part of reducing future risk.
But cancer-free was not the end of the story. For Michelle, that's when the real work began. The work of processing her thoughts, feelings, and insights about what happened, what she went through, and what it's like to be on the other side.
With honesty, humor, faith, and a writer's instinct for examining life under a microscope, Michelle takes readers inside the diagnosis, the fear, the treatment, the waiting, the acceptance of help, the changing body, the changing priorities, and the strange separation of living outside the circle of ordinary life.
This is more than a memoir about breast cancer. It is a reflective and inspiring story about love, family, faith, hope, healing, self-motivation, acceptance, and the search for inner peace and wholeness after life has been profoundly interrupted.
If you are facing cancer, supporting someone you love, or trying to make sense of something you never saw coming, Cancer Don't Care is a reminder that you are not alone.
A personal message from the author:My journey taught me that even in the darkest moments, there is light. And where there is light, there is hope. And through it all, we find incredible strength. Strength we never knew existed.
