A Campaigner At Home is a novel written by Charlotte Bronte's lesser-known sister, Shirley Bronte. The book was published in 1865 and is set in Yorkshire, England, during the time of the Napoleonic Wars. The story follows the life of a young woman named Caroline Helstone, who is left alone after the death of her father. Caroline is taken in by her uncle, Reverend Helstone, who is a strict and conservative man. Despite her uncle's disapproval, Caroline becomes involved in local politics and campaigns for social reform.Caroline's involvement in politics brings her into contact with Robert Moore, a wealthy mill owner who is also campaigning for social reform. The two become close, but their relationship is complicated by the fact that Robert is engaged to another woman. As Caroline becomes more involved in the campaign for social reform, she also becomes more aware of the struggles faced by the working-class people of Yorkshire. She begins to see the world in a new light and realizes that her privileged upbringing has shielded her from the harsh realities of life for many people.A Campaigner At Home is a novel that explores themes of social reform, class, and gender roles.
