Campaign of '84: Biographies of S. Grover Cleveland and Thomas A. Hendricks is a book written by Benjamin Le Fevre that provides biographical information about two prominent figures in American politics during the late 19th century. The book focuses on the 1884 presidential election, which was contested between Grover Cleveland, the Democratic candidate, and James G. Blaine, the Republican candidate. The first section of the book is dedicated to Grover Cleveland, who was the Governor of New York at the time of the election. The biography covers his early life, his career as a lawyer, and his political rise to become mayor of Buffalo and then governor of New York. The book also examines Cleveland's policies and accomplishments as governor, including his efforts to reform the civil service and his opposition to political corruption. The second section of the book is dedicated to Thomas A. Hendricks, who was Cleveland's running mate in the 1884 election. Hendricks was a former governor of Indiana and a prominent figure in the Democratic Party. The biography covers his early life, his career as a lawyer and politician, and his time as governor of Indiana. The book also examines Hendricks' role in the Democratic Party and his support for Cleveland's candidacy.Throughout the book, Le Fevre provides context for the 1884 election and the political climate of the time. He also includes excerpts from speeches and other writings by Cleveland and Hendricks, as well as contemporary news articles and political cartoons.
