Why Alaska? Why would a territory with such incredibly difficult and hostile terrain consume so much of the resources and energy of the participating countries of World War II? There is no denying the geography of the situation. The very tip of Alaska's Aleutian Island chain is so close to the territory of Japan, it practically begged to be a launching point for an invasion of Japan or even a Japanese invasion of North America.
