In Cameroun Colonial Takeover and Control of Ambazonia: Deconstructing Myths of Territorial Acquisition, Professor Carlson Anyangwe presents a powerful and meticulously argued examination of one of Africa's most enduring and controversial political conflicts. Drawing upon decades of legal scholarship, historical research, and engagement with international law, Anyangwe chronicles more than sixty years of the tragic and traumatic relationship between Ambazonia (formerly the British Southern Cameroons) and the Republic of Cameroun.
Compact yet densely informative, the book systematically dismantles the legal, historical, and political claims advanced by Cameroun to justify its control over Ambazonia. The author argues that the territory of Ambazonia possesses a distinct legal identity rooted in international treaties, colonial boundary arrangements, United Nations trusteeship agreements, and the principle of self-determination. He contends that Cameroun's subsequent annexation and colonization of Ambazonia represent a violation of international law and a continuing denial of the political rights of the Ambazonian people.
Anyangwe traces how the foundations of Cameroun's territorial ambitions were laid in the 1960s with significant French influence and support. He examines the political strategies, administrative policies, and military actions through which Cameroun sought to erase borders, suppress Ambazonian identity, and consolidate control over the territory. The book details the human cost of this process, including widespread repression, displacement, resource exploitation, and the deaths of tens of thousands of Ambazonians.
Yet this work is not merely a catalogue of suffering. It is also a study of resilience, resistance, and the enduring quest for freedom. While exposing what the author regards as the myths and falsehoods underpinning Cameroun's claims, the book affirms that colonial domination is neither permanent nor irreversible. Through legal reasoning, historical evidence, and moral conviction, Anyangwe offers a compelling case for understanding the Ambazonian struggle as part of the unfinished global project of decolonization and human self-determination.
