This article begins with the observation that cocoa remains a pillar of the national economy. It remains one of the country's main agricultural exports and is essential to a balanced trade balance. For many years, the cocoa sector has contributed to funding the state budget and building public and quasi-public infrastructure. It has also helped provide a livelihood, both directly and indirectly, for several million Cameroonians in the southern region. This same sector has enabled many families to pay for their children's education, build homes, and gain access to medical care. Nevertheless, cocoa producers are trapped by fluctuations in world prices. In some areas, land is becoming scarce, expensive, inaccessible, and, more often than not, the subject of ongoing disputes between families. Young people in rural areas struggle to gain access to land ownership, which remains concentrated in the hands of elders or urban comprador elites. The sector also suffers from a shortage of skilled labor, a shortage that is generally offset by informal and arduous labor.
