Eventually he sheds the veneer of civilization, relying on primordial instincts and lessons he learns, to emerge as a leader in the wild. Jack London lived for most of a year in the Yukon collecting material for the book. Jack London's novel is both an animal adventure and a work of literary naturalism. It explores the thin line between civilization and instinct, showing how environment can awaken ancient forces beneath the surface of identity. The story's emotional power comes from Buck's struggle not only to survive, but to answer a deeper call from the natural world.
