The Call of the East: A Romance of Far Formosa is a novel written by Thurlow Fraser and published in 1914. The story is set in the early 20th century and follows the adventures of a young American man named John Denton, who travels to Taiwan (then known as Formosa) to work as a missionary. As soon as Denton arrives in Taiwan, he is immediately captivated by the beauty of the island and its people. He soon becomes friends with a local man named Teng, who helps him navigate the unfamiliar culture and customs of the island. Denton also falls in love with a young Taiwanese woman named Lin, who is the daughter of a wealthy merchant. Their romance is complicated by the fact that Denton is a missionary and Lin is a devout Buddhist. Despite their differences, the two are drawn to each other and must navigate the challenges of their cultural divide. The novel also explores the political tensions of the time, as Taiwan was under Japanese occupation. Denton becomes involved in the struggle for Taiwanese independence and must decide where his loyalties lie. Overall, The Call of the East is a sweeping romance novel that explores the complexities of cultural exchange and political conflict in early 20th century Taiwan. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
