For more than a thousand years, Harun al-Rashid has lived two lives.
One belongs to history: the Abbasid caliph who ruled from 786 to 809, presided over an empire at the height of its wealth and cultural prestige, fought Byzantium, entrusted the machinery of government to the powerful Barmakid family, performed repeated pilgrimages to Mecca, and ultimately died on campaign in Khurasan.
The other belongs to legend: the mysterious ruler of One Thousand and One Nights who slipped through Baghdad in disguise, listened to his subjects, confronted injustice personally, and wandered freely through the city after dark.
But where does history end and legend begin?
Caliph Between Legend and History explores the man behind one of the medieval world's most enduring reputations. Drawing on chronicles, correspondence, competing historical traditions, and modern scholarship, this book follows Harun from his uncertain childhood and early military campaigns to his violent accession, extraordinary delegation of power, imperial wealth, diplomatic relationships, religious devotion, and increasingly fragile hold over a vast and diverse empire.
It examines the spectacular rise and sudden destruction of the Barmakids, the fragmentation already gathering at the empire's edges, and Harun's ambitious attempt to divide the succession between his sons-a plan intended to prevent civil war that instead helped lay the groundwork for one of the Abbasid age's greatest conflicts.
This is not an attempt to simply destroy the legend. It is an invitation to understand why the legend emerged-and what it concealed.
Behind the curtain stood a ruler more complicated, more human, and perhaps more historically fascinating than the storyteller's caliph ever needed to be.
