The Caged Lion is a novel written by Charlotte M. Yonge, first published in 1869. The story is set in 16th century England and follows the life of a young boy named Richard who is taken in by a wealthy family after his own family is killed in a shipwreck. Richard is raised alongside the family's daughter, Dorothy, and the two become close friends. As Richard grows older, he becomes increasingly aware of the political and religious tensions in England, particularly between Catholics and Protestants. He becomes involved in a plot to overthrow Queen Elizabeth I and replace her with Mary, Queen of Scots, who is being held captive in England at the time. However, Richard's plans are discovered and he is imprisoned in the Tower of London. He is eventually released and allowed to leave England, but not before he learns the true cost of his actions and the impact they have had on those he loves. The Caged Lion is a historical novel that explores themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the consequences of one's actions. It is a compelling story that gives readers a glimpse into the turbulent political and religious climate of 16th century England.Historical fiction (time of James I) by an early blockbuster author. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
