Being the oldest child in a family with four siblings, a lot falls on Beatrice's shoulders at a young age. She has a philandering daddy that doesn't like to work, and a mother with a heart condition. Beatrice dreams of a better life while trying to get through school. When tragedy happens in the family, she has to grow up fast. When she graduates, her daddy ships her off to live with her aunt in Florida. That was fine with Beatrice because she had been ready to leave for the last year. She had her dreams and a recipe to hold onto, a car, and a hundred dollars her step-mother had been able to stash for her trip. Things aren't going so well for her in Florida until she meets her friend, Kate. They decide to open their own business, and in the process, she runs into more trouble than she can handle. She discovers that a simple brownie recipe could be the beginning or ending to her dream. There was just one problem; the secret ingredient was hard to come by.
