The place of occurrence in the novel is primarily a village. Raimohan is a rich and reputed man around the village. H has a son named Atin, and a daughter named Rhima. Atin has a love affair with Bulti, a girl in the same village. After the completion of his school education, he is sent to Kolkata for higher studies. He comes in close contact with a girl there named Oindrila. Towards the beginning, when he came home, he met Bulti, but gradually he avoided meeting her. She felt sad, but waited, in spite of her despair, she kept waiting for Atin. On the other hand, a classmate of hers expresses his love for Rhima. In her dilemma to take a decision, she learns that the boy's family has left the village. She lost all hope for her life.
