Blood at the Root is a thriller of a historical nature. It was written by poet and author Kimberly Y. Peters, inspired by the painful lyrics to the song Strange Fruit sung by Billie Holiday and covered by Nina Simone. Strange fruit is a metaphor for the dead bodies of enslaved Africans murdered and hung on southern trees. This screenplay is a story of how the descendants of slave owners [Osarius' family] met the ancestors of their chattel slavery ventures while both were seeking a form of freedom.

While reading, you'll see images of the actors who brought these characters to life during the table read. The main character, Greg was played by fellow writer, Kyle Reasor, alongside his wife Essence. Essence was played by actress Krystyn Spratt.

These main characters inherited a massive property--simple enough. Only to find there were some important details not disclosed in the trust of a deadly nature. This created a maze of confusion for them and the once enslaved. There became a struggle in transitioning. The once enslaved were also imprisoned in the spiritual realm. The only way out of this prison lied in the hands of Greg and his family.

Creatively written as a screenplay, performed as a table read and then published for the world to enjoy...this piece was facilitated by creative and Stage Manager, Rita Cofield, who played a big role in helping to fine tune this cinematic body of work.
