Twenty-Five Patterns, Two Stitches, One Skill

Every filling pattern in this book comes down to two stitches worked with discipline: a reversible double running stitch, the same one Tudor embroiderers once worked into linen cuffs and collars, and an ordinary back stitch. Sixteen chapters and twenty-five named patterns build outward from those two stitches alone, from a ten-swatch practice sampler to a bordered table runner fifty-four inches long.

From Sampler to Table Runner

  • Learn the reversible Holbein stitch first, on a scrap of 28-count evenweave, so both sides of every piece look equally clean.
  • Read a blackwork chart correctly, where a symbol marks a line's direction rather than a filled square the way a cross-stitch chart does.
  • Work all ten geometric fills in the opening sampler, from an open Box Fill through a near-solid Solid Diamond Block, each one named on its own.
  • Build seven finished pieces: a sampler, a coaster set, bookmarks, two monochrome hoop pieces, a silhouette, a card, and a table runner.
  • Shade a rose and a pair of floral hoop motifs using stitch density alone, with tonal shading standing in for a second color of thread.
  • Void a cat silhouette against a filled ground, so the animal's shape exists only because the fabric around it isn't stitched.
  • Switch between a 28-count evenweave and a 14-count Aida cloth whenever a pattern needs to run larger or smaller on the page.
