Black Ralph Or The Helmsman Of Hurlgate is a novel written by J. H. Ingraham. The story is set in the mid-19th century in New York City and follows the adventures of a young sailor named Ralph who becomes the helmsman of the Hurlgate, a ship owned by a wealthy merchant. Ralph is a skilled sailor and quickly rises through the ranks, but he also has a dark secret: he is black. In a time when racism is rampant, Ralph must navigate the treacherous waters of prejudice and discrimination while also dealing with the challenges of life at sea. Along the way, he encounters a cast of colorful characters, including a beautiful young woman named Mary, who becomes his love interest. The novel is a thrilling tale of adventure, romance, and intrigue, and is a classic example of 19th-century American literature.Ralph's indignant surprise--his fierce wrath may easily be conceived when the brief will was read by the solicitor and the full intention of the deceased testator known. For a few moments he was silent with rage, shame and disappointment. He then strode up to the lawyer, and snatching the will from his hands keenly examined his father's signature which he had given such proof of being familiar with. It was Sir Walter's writing. He then cast the will in the face of the solicitor and strode fiercely towards Edward. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
