Bingo with Virgil is a distinguished debut collection of poetic short fictions & poetry that weaves ancient texts with modern life in a masterful bridging of experience, sensibility, and time. While playing bingo at a suburban hall ordinary people find ways to relate their real and imaginary lives to passages from The Aeneid, and its author, the Roman poet Virgil. But it is the irrepressible Addie, telling us the story of her life-transformed by Virgilian Bingo, who separates the world's beauty into acceptable and unacceptable - underscoring how Brait's contemporary voice has the power to bring about new ways of understanding the relationship between past and present, self and other. In this dynamic mix of poetry, prose, and lyricism, Brait shows us that the great stories all have worlds within them, ready for exploration - and that the great storytellers can always be reinvented for new, because this is how we continue to create new ways of discovering the old that honours our truths, histories and legacies. With an Introduction by the author.
