Amara has always been the biggest girl in her class.

She's not the girl who suddenly got bigger one day. She's always been this size - round-faced, round-bodied, and until recently, ashamed of both. At recess, three girls point and laugh. You're so big, one says. It isn't a compliment, and Amara knows it.

Her grandmother doesn't tell her to ignore them. She takes her hand and walks her to the edge of the village, to the biggest tree Amara has ever seen - a baobab, older than anyone alive, wide enough that five children linking arms still couldn't hug all the way around it.

Your body is like this tree, Amara, her grandmother says. Big is not a bad word here. It never has been.

Big Like the Baobab is a gentle, beautifully illustrated story for the child who has ever been told her body is too much of something - too big, too round, too different from the girl standing next to her. It doesn't lecture. It doesn't preach body positivity in a slogan. It gives a child one image she can actually hold onto: a tree that gives shade, feeds birds, survives every storm, and is loved precisely because of its size, not in spite of it.

For the daughter who's been teased on the playground. For the classroom that needs a story where the big girl is the hero, not the punchline. For every parent looking for a bedtime story that leaves a child feeling like more of herself, not less.

Ages 4-8. A story to read once and return to for years.
