It opens sweet, black-and-white and nostalgic, a picture-perfect 1950s family with kids on bikes and a station wagon in the driveway. But somewhere in the second reel, things stop feeling like a movie and start feeling like a memory. The names match. The house matches. The father drinking behind a closed bedroom door matches. What starts as an eerie coincidence turns into something Mike can't look away from: his own childhood, his own trauma, playing out in front of him on a screen he can't stop and can't leave.
Marshall Cantone writes this one in a voice that feels like a guy telling you the story over a beer, blunt, funny in places it probably shouldn't be, and completely unguarded when it counts. It's part courtroom drama, part coming-of-age story, and part something closer to a Twilight Zone episode, and by the final pages it becomes something else entirely: a reckoning with what it actually does to a person to grow up in a house where you never knew which version of your father was coming home.
