Behind the Tall Black Gate
by Pavel Pleskot How are you still alive? a reader once asked. This book is the answer.
Patrik grew up gay in a house made unsafe by his father's drinking, and in a country that made it dangerous to be who he was. His mother was the one steady thing he had - until she was gone, and staying stopped feeling survivable. In 1981, Patrik made the decision that would change everything. What followed was a journey across two borders, into a refugee camp behind an iron gate, and eventually to a new life in Canada - one he didn't fully understand the cost of until he was on a plane, alone, with everything he'd left behind. Behind the Tall Black Gate is Pavel Pleskot's own true story - of a house and a country that broke him, and the long road to a life he finally got to choose. Contains mature content, including depictions of abuse. Reader discretion advised. About the Author

Pavel Pleskot grew up in communist-era Prague and left everything behind in 1981 in search of a life he could finally call his own. After crossing two borders and passing through a refugee camp, he eventually settled in Canada - a chapter of his life he's still writing about today. He later married and now lives in Cambridge, New Zealand, where he works as a painter. Behind the Tall Black Gate is his first book, and he is currently writing a sequel.
