Thirty-six year old Lucy Hughes is crouched in the corner of her sitting room with a wound to her head. Her children, twelve year-old Jimmy, and eight year-old Genevieve, are upstairs asleep. Her husband, forty-three year old Rick Keane, has just poured himself a whisky on the rocks.

In the morning Lucy takes 10,000 from Rick's safe and leaves him.

No one in Clarabeg can understand why Lucy Hughes would give up her enviable position as wife to the charming Rick Keane. Only her best friend Ellie knows about the wound on Lucy's temple: no one knows about the Dolce and Gabanna dress in the chiminea. Behind Closed Doors follows Lucy's determination not to allow her life to be smothered, no matter how far Rick pushes her.
