Before It Was History

Before It Was History

by Jason Dority

History is often told from the moment everything breaks.

This book stops just before.

Before It Was History is a collection of restrained historical poems set in the moments leading up to catastrophe, violence, or irreversible change. Each poem is anchored to a specific place and date-mines before collapse, factories before fire, rivers before bloodshed, doors before they are forced open.

These poems do not explain events or dramatize outcomes. They observe. They wait. They document the ordinary details that existed while history was still undecided.

Spanning labor disasters, war, displacement, civil rights flashpoints, and forgotten American landscapes, this collection treats history not as spectacle, but as lived presence-quiet, human, and unresolved.

Written in a minimalist witness style, Before It Was History is for readers who value restraint, accuracy, and ethical distance over narrative closure.
