In February 2009, a woman walking her dog across Albuquerque's West Mesa discovered a human bone protruding from the earth. What followed became one of the most haunting homicide investigations in New Mexico history. Beneath the isolated landscape, investigators uncovered the remains of eleven women and the unborn child of one victim.
The discovery connected disappearances that had stretched across years.
Buried on the West Mesa reconstructs the lives of the women, the painstaking excavation of the burial ground, the forensic effort that restored every victim's identity, and the investigation into whoever placed them there.
The book follows the 118th Street Task Force through thousands of leads, repeated searches, forensic analysis, and the disturbing suspects whose histories forced detectives to look closer. It examines Lorenzo Montoya, a known killer who lived near the burial area, convicted sexual offender Joseph Blea, and other leads while carefully separating documented evidence from suspicion and theory.
It also explores the unanswered questions surrounding additional missing women, the difficulties created by years of decomposition and delayed discovery, and the advances in DNA investigation that may still reshape what investigators know.
Above all, this is not a story that reduces eleven women to a body count. Monica Candelaria, Victoria Chavez, Virginia Cloven, Syllannia Edwards, Cinnamon Elks, Doreen Marquez, Julie Nieto, Veronica Romero, Evelyn Salazar, Michelle Valdez, and Jamie Barela had names, families, histories, and lives before someone attempted to erase them beneath the desert.
Their identities were recovered.
The search for justice continues.
