The Brother Clerks: A Tale of New Orleans, written by Xariffa and originally published in 1857, is a historical novel set in the city of New Orleans during the mid-19th century. The story follows the lives of two brothers, Louis and Auguste, who work as clerks in a local store.Louis, the elder brother, is a hardworking and responsible individual who takes his job seriously and dreams of one day owning his own business. Auguste, on the other hand, is more carefree and enjoys spending his time gambling and socializing with friends. As the story progresses, the brothers become involved in a series of events that test their loyalty and integrity. Louis finds himself caught up in a scandal involving a wealthy plantation owner, while Auguste becomes embroiled in a dangerous affair with a married woman.Throughout the novel, Xariffa provides a vivid portrayal of life in New Orleans during this period, including the city's vibrant culture and social scene, as well as its darker side, such as the prevalence of slavery and the corruption of the local government. The Brother Clerks is a compelling tale of family, loyalty, and the struggle for success in a rapidly changing world. With its richly drawn characters and vivid setting, it offers readers a fascinating glimpse into a pivotal moment in American history. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
