Almost every guide to keeping hens in Britain was written before the law changed.

Since 1 October 2024 you must register your birds in Great Britain even if you keep three in a suburban garden. The old fifty-bird threshold is gone. Feeding your hens the peelings from your own kitchen is a criminal offence. Burying one at the bottom of the garden is unlawful almost everywhere in the UK. Most books on the shelf predate all of it, and the government's own guidance is still built around a threshold that no longer decides anything.
