Written for the general public, this book explains step by step the major treaties and events that shaped the border we know today: the Treaty of Aranjuez of 1777, the independence of Haiti in 1804, the Haitian occupation of 1822, the great treaties of the nineteenth century, the Final Protocol of 1936, and the October 1937 massacre known as El Corte - one of the most atrocious and silenced crimes in Caribbean history.
Based on the works of historians Manuel Arturo Peña Batlle, Manuel Arturo Machado Báez, Bernardo Vega, and Frank Moya Pons, this book distills decades of historical research into an accessible, honest, and rigorous narrative that any reader can follow without prior knowledge of the subject.
This is not a book of definitive answers. It is a book for understanding where we come from, what we have been, and why the Dominican-Haitian border remains, four centuries after its origins, one of the most complex and fascinating divisions in the Western Hemisphere.

About the Author
