With the war in its fourth year, Corporal Edward Thompkins' faith in the Confederate cause was dwindling, but he hoped for General Grant's retreat after General Lee stood firm against him at Cold Harbor in Central Virginia. Yet, his doubts persists. His faith in the cause is tested when he encounters a solitary Union soldier while on picket duty.

The man spat on the ground, saying, Just want a talk. He paused, lowering his hands. And maybe some tobacco? Regiment, be all out. I know you Johnnies, have plenty.
Edward questioned the Federal's motivations for a moment. If that man really wanted tobacco, maybe Edward could get something in return for it. Wondering if he still had any tobacco, he asked. What about a trade then? He felt around his brown trousers' pockets with his left hand. I won't take anything less than some coffee. His hand fumbled through the folds of the pocket and among the matches. He needed the coffee-despite the lack of trust he had for the Union Corporal. There was nothing more precious. It was gold.
