This political history of modern Brittany focuses on the social, cultural, and economic factors underlying Breton nationalism. Brittany is characterized by small land holdings, poverty, and the social afflictions that accompany chronically depressed areas. Reece describes the formulation in 1898 of the Union Regionaliste Bretonne and the subsequent movements toward nationalism, autonomy, and separatism.
