Most of us have done it.
At some point, a new school, a new country, a new job, we built a version of ourselves designed to fit in. We got so good at being that person that we forgot who was underneath.
The Boy Who Lost His Name is the story of what happens when you finally go back for them.
José (Aaron) Alvarez was twelve years old when he arrived in Sacramento from Mexico City. On his first day at school, a teacher called him by a name he didn't recognize as his own. Unable to explain the difference, he accepted it.
What seemed like a small moment became the beginning of a divided life.
Over the next thirty-three years, he built a life on top of that moment, janitor to executive, immigrant to citizen, outsider to leader. From the outside, it looked like belonging.
But beneath every accomplishment, a boy waited.
At forty-five, sitting across from his coach, José was asked a question he couldn't answer:
Do you believe you belong here?
This is the story of going back for the answer.
And for the boy he left behind.
For readers of Educated, Born a Crime, Beautiful Country, and Crying in H Mart.
For everyone who has ever become someone else to belong and wondered what was lost along the way.
