Bowden's Boat, an ancient wooden barge, mysteriously abandoned in a Cheshire field miles from any water. Rotting in a sea of grass with a tree for a sail, the old craft is a safe haven for young Pete from the frequent storms of his mother's psychopathic tendencies.
Life is pretty lonely and there are few pleasures fora young lad, growing up on a remote farm in the nineteen fifties. With the aid of an imaginary friend- the slightly sinister Steve- he develops a strategy of petty resistance against his mother. This lands him in deeper trouble, but does bring feelings of satisfaction. His Dad is no help, running off to the pub at the first sign of conflict. Pete is on his own, until he meets a school-friend, Malc, who shows him that some families are different. The journey through to adulthood via girls and music becomes an increasingly difficult one, despite Malc's support. Will Pete ever find a way to break free from his mother's control?
