Every life is a library. This is one shelf of mine.
Born in a refugee camp in Thailand after her family fled Vietnam by boat, Gigi Wong inherited a story of survival long before she was old enough to understand it.
But Borrowed Light is not simply a story about surviving.
It is a story about the people who quietly teach us how to live.
Through childhood apartments crowded with family, neighborhood games, library story times, teachers who opened new worlds, strangers who became family, and a mother who planted flowers from tiny seeds behind little white picket fences, Gigi traces the ordinary moments that shaped the woman she would become.
There is hardship here-poverty, addiction, displacement, violence, and the uncertainty of beginning again.
But there is also laughter.
Baklava.
Fireflies.
Cherry tomatoes.
Books.
Gardens.
And people who opened their doors when there was no room left.
With warmth, humor, and compassion, Gigi looks back not to judge the people who came before her, but to understand them. She explores how circumstances shape us, how pain and love can exist in the same family, and how free will gives each generation the opportunity to decide what it will carry forward.
At its heart, Borrowed Light asks a simple question:
How much of who we become was first given to us by someone else?
A mother plants a seed.
A neighbor opens a door.
A teacher reads a story.
A stranger makes room.
And decades later, their light is still traveling.
Borrowed Light: A Memoir of Becoming is a love letter to family, memory, community, and all the seemingly small acts that become part of another human being.
We do not become ourselves alone.
Sometimes we carry borrowed light until we learn how to create-and share-our own.
