Queen Ioanna, young and isolated in a foreign land, watches her marriage dissolve as Boris becomes consumed by impossible political calculations. Caught between Hitler's demands for troops and Jews, and Stalin's advancing Red Army, Boris executes a desperate strategy to minimize Bulgaria's participation in the Nazi war machine-a strategy professional historians have failed to synthesize for over 80 years.
Yet in the shadows of state dinners and diplomatic maneuvers, another conspiracy unfolds: an affair between the lonely queen and her husband's trusted secretary, Stanislav Balan. As the war closes in and choices narrow, one question becomes unavoidable: How far would someone go to save the people they love from the Romanov fate that the Red Army brings?
