Anton T. Boisen is regarded as the founder of clinical pastoral education and a formative figure in clinical chaplaincy and the psychology of religion. A Boisen Reader brings together twelve of his most important journal articles, written between 1923 and 1961, alongside critical studies of his life, thought, clinical method, and enduring influence.
Edited and introduced by Glenn H. Asquith, Jr., the collection traces Boisen's distinctive effort to understand religious experience through the firsthand study of living human documents. It explores his interpretation of theological education through clinical experience, pastoral care, mental disorder, worship, religious experience, and the relationships between psychology, psychiatry and religion. Essays by Seward Hiltner, Paul W. Pruyser, Henri J. M. Nouwen, Seward Hiltner, and others assess Boisen's contributions and continuing significance.
