A family's journey across the USA around Christmas time. The mother and the daughter are clairvoyants, and the father is an introverted alcoholic, while the son is a religious zealot. The mother has a dream about her own mother that she recounts to her husband, who seems to know its interpretation but shies away. They are suddenly seeking to reach the dying grandmother before she passes.
Grandmother is an immigrant from Egypt who married a Czech immigrant whom she met in New York. She escaped Egypt as she had then lost her young husband along with her faith in her dad's slogans about the 1952 revolution that turned the country upside down. She escaped along with her best friend Pepper, and her family, who ran away in fear of religious persecution against the Jews of Egypt.
Grandfather, on the other hand is an admitted womanizer, whom his wife tries to reform incessantly. He is also a nonbeliever, always mocking Grandmother's religious belief.
The journey delves into the individual characters along with their interactions and internal conflicts.
The family grows closer to one another during the trip and visit, as they face their conflicts.
A special experience of grandmom with near-death and her description of the afterlife is interrupted. She thinks she's on a mission to convert her agnostic husband, and lead him to believe in God.
Would she succeed?
Will the journey change anyone's life around?
All the characters are nameless, referred to as Mother, Father, Daughter and Son, and later Grandmother and Grandfather. Only Pepper and her family have symbolic names, why?
