Every summer, twelve-year-old Gabrielle Boudreaux looks forward to the Fête du Crabe Bleu: steaming pots of blue crabs, Zydeco music, neighbors gathered along Bayou Teche, and traditions that have connected generations of Louisiana Creole families.
But this summer, the festival is in trouble.
After its longtime organizer suffers a stroke, an outside events company offers to take over. Their plans sound modern and profitable: admission fees, professional food vendors, a cover band, and a completely redesigned festival.
There is just one problem.
It would no longer belong to the community.
Gabrielle refuses to believe that something so important can simply be handed away. Her search for answers leads to the story of her great-grandmother, Bernadette Boudreaux, who helped create the first Blue Crab Festival after a devastating flood in 1952.
Somewhere in Mousse Grise may still be the original ledger containing the Promise, an agreement signed by the families who gathered beside the bayou for that first festival. If Gabrielle can find it, she may be able to prove what the people of Mousse Grise have known all along:
The festival belongs to them.
With only days before the parish council votes, Gabrielle searches community halls, old boxes, barns, family memories, and forgotten pieces of history. But saving the festival will require more than finding something from the past. Gabrielle must convince an entire community to stand together in the present.
